Church of Stories is back with a brand-new audio drama following the success of its breakout debut, Goodbye Gold Coast. Titled The Gold Coast Darlings, the upcoming series pulls listeners into the tension, ambition, and rich soundscape of 1950s Accra, a time when the nation stood on the brink of independence.
Set in 1956, just weeks before the historic elections that would shape the future of the Gold Coast, the six-part drama is directed by Joewackle J. Kusi. The story centres on Sika, a gifted young singer who leaves Sunyani for Accra after being lured by Bombay, a charming band manager who promises her fame and a new life in the capital. But when Sika gets into trouble with the law, two determined Crown agents, Eoin and Victoria, use the moment to stir conflict against The Widow, the formidable leader of an all-female band known as The Gold Coast Darlings, a woman with deep grudges against the political elite.

Co-written by Joewackle J. Kusi and Fui Can-Tamakloe, the series blends political drama with music and history, serving as both a gripping thriller and a heartfelt tribute to the era’s culture and sound. The production features an impressive lineup of acting and musical talent, including Adomaa, Edinam Atatsi, Ayisi, Jasmine Baroudi, Kojo Boakye, Solomon Fixon-Owoo, Timothy Banks, John Abeiku Sagoe, Gina Castel, Jessica Larny, Chiderah David, OB Black, Kwaku Sakyi, Mark Cofie Jnr, Miss Lankai, Sɛkyerewaa, and Joojo Addison.
Arriving in a year that marks a century of Highlife, The Gold Coast Darlings celebrates the genre with original music that reimagines love, power, and everyday life in pre-independence Accra. The series is produced by Church Of Stories, with more announcements and behind-the-scenes moments expected soon.
While you wait, Goodbye Gold Coast is available to stream now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other major podcast platforms.
