Ghanaian singer LALI onthisone has unveiled Ashiokor, a four-track EP inspired by the loss of his late aunt. Rather than trying to move quickly past the pain, the project gives space to grief while exploring the emotions and experiences that come with loss, heartbreak, resilience, faith, and rebuilding. Across the EP, LALI moves between English and Ga, pairing intimate storytelling with warm Afro-fusion production.
At the heart of the project is the title track, Ashiokor, named in honour of his aunt. The song reflects on the shock of losing someone whose presence has been deeply woven into your life. LALI approaches the loss with vulnerability, expressing gratitude for the role she played in his life while acknowledging the difficulty of accepting her absence. The track also becomes a personal commitment to continue pursuing his ambitions and live in a way that would make her proud, turning the song into both a tribute and a heartfelt farewell.
The EP then moves beyond mourning into themes of perseverance. On Korkordene, featuring Marince Omario, LALI draws from the Ga word for “frog” and its ability to exist across different environments. That image becomes a metaphor for adapting to life’s changing circumstances, suggesting that resilience comes from learning how to keep moving regardless of what life brings.

Featuring Pheebz, Far Away explores the emotional fallout of a relationship strained by distance and an unfulfilled promise to remain close. The track captures feelings of disappointment and hurt without becoming confrontational, allowing the emotion to come through in a more reflective and restrained way.
Closing the EP is Alright, featuring Eli Khay. The Afro-fusion track brings together many of the project’s ideas, balancing the reality of struggle with gratitude and optimism. Faith, perseverance, hard work, and authenticity emerge as sources of strength as LALI looks toward better days.
Ultimately, Ashiokor presents a personal journey through loss and recovery. Grief, heartbreak, resilience, and hope exist side by side, with LALI transforming deeply personal experiences into music that looks beyond the pain. Its emotional impact comes from the specificity of the story—the person being remembered, the language being spoken, and the experiences being shared—making the EP feel intimate, sincere, and forward-looking.
