British-Ghanaian artist and producer ginius has released her new project, Here’s Where We Once Were, a deeply personal body of work that explores love in all its stages, from the excitement of falling for someone to the uncertainty, distance, heartbreak, and acceptance that can eventually follow.
For ginius, the project is perhaps her most personal work yet. Rather than writing from imagination, she draws directly from experiences she has lived through, making each song feel like a reflection of a different moment in her own story.
“This is probably the realest tape I ever wrote. Some of the songs I have written before this I had not lived, but this is a tape that every part has once been my reality. It’s the beginning of the end; simply put,” ginius explains.
Across the project, she documents the different emotions that come with relationships. There are moments of affection and excitement, but also the difficult periods when things begin to change, and the connection between two people starts to fade. Rather than presenting a perfect love story, ginius allows the project to sit in those complicated spaces.
Sonically, Here’s Where We Once Were moves between Afro R&B, Amapiano, and ginius’ signature “Afro Blend” sound. Her music continues to draw from her Ghanaian roots, blending elements of Highlife with contemporary Afropop and R&B while incorporating other modern African influences.
The project brings together several producers, each adding a different texture to the overall sound. Insvne Auggie produced “Love Me Softly,” “Woman,” “Different (Remix)” and “So You Do,” while Joker handles production on “Test Drive.” Okukuseku the Bang Machine produced “Lost & Numb,” and KFM Dadaba produced “Time & Attention,” a track that started as a freestyle. Van Boied handled the mixing and mastering for the song.
Despite the different production styles across the project, the emotional direction remains clear. Each song feels like its own memory, capturing a particular stage of love and the emotions that come with it.
At the heart of Here’s Where We Once Were is the idea that not every relationship is meant to last, but that does not make what happened any less meaningful. Whether love ends because people grow apart, circumstances change, or through loss, the memories and experiences shared can still hold value.
That honesty has become an important part of Ginius’ artistry. Firmly connected to her Ghanaian heritage, she continues to carve out her space as both a singer-songwriter and producer, creating music that feels personal while still giving her growing community of listeners, the Copilots, something they can see themselves in. With Here’s Where We Once Were, ginius opens a chapter of her life through music, one shaped by love, heartbreak, reflection, and the acceptance that sometimes all you can do is appreciate what once was.
