Adekunle Gold Revisits His Musical Roots on His New Album ‘Fuji’

The Nigerian singer’s sixth studio album is a refined project that reimagines the groovy Yoruba folk-inspired rhythms of fuji music.

Adekunle Gold gazes directly into the camera wearing a red outfit with no shirt underneath, a silver chain, and a neckpiece with a large round gold pendant. His sixth studio album, Fuji, marks another defining moment in his career.

Over the past decade, Adekunle Gold has built an unshakable reputation through consistent hit-making and a willingness to reinvent his sound. His latest album takes its name from the indigenous fuji genre that originated in southwest Nigeria, a clear nod to the project’s core inspiration.

Ahead of the album’s release, he dropped several singles including the romantic Obimo, the luxurious Coco Money, and Bobo, a confident collaboration with Lojay and Shoday. These songs previewed his creative direction for Fuji, a modern and polished reinterpretation of fuji’s vibrant Yoruba folk rhythms fused with contemporary Nigerian pop.

Adekunle Gold describes the album as “the sound of Lagos,” reflecting the city’s deep connection to fuji music. “I grew up on fuji. It’s at every party, every event. It’s ingrained in me,” he says. He also frames Fuji as an acronym for “Finding Uncharted Journeys Inside,” symbolizing his evolving artistic journey. “Even when I sing R&B, I still sound fuji,” he adds, viewing the album as a tribute to the sound that shaped his youth.

Fuji carries the folk-pop warmth of his early releases, infused with the bold pop energy that has defined his recent work. The album explores familiar themes—celebration, ambition, and love—delivered with Adekunle Gold’s signature charm.

The project features a diverse lineup of collaborators, including Nigerian superstar Davido, East Atlanta R&B artist 6lack, and rising Nigerian street-rap talent Mavo.
